History
The course was originally Lord Egerton of Tatton’s own personal course, tucked away in the far corner of the Tatton Estate. It was said thatLady Mary Egerton did not wish to see the golfers from the windows of the mansion.
Lady Mary was the person responsible for Knutsford’s narrow pavements – so that men and women could not stroll down the streets arm-in-arm.
Lord Egerton invited guests and selected gentlemen of Knutsford to play with him on the original course on a Wednesday or Saturday, but in 1891 he agreed to open up the course to Knutsford gentlemen and women. Mr Charles Ashworth called a meeting of 13 gentlemen in the George Hotel, now the Brasserie Blanc Restaurant, on 5th August, 1891, and The Knutsford Golf Club was formed.
The annual fee was set at one guinea and by the end of 1891 there were 75 men and women members. The club continued to grow but in 1909 their President Lord Egerton died, and the Convalescent Home for poor sick women set up by Lady Mary near the Knutsford end of the Estate was closed. It was suggested that the building be converted into a clubhouse for the golf members and when The Knutsford Golf Club joined with Cranford Billiards and Social Club in 1911 they moved into the new premises.
In 1958 the then Lord Egerton, a non-golfer, died – the last lord of the family – and he left the Tatton mansion and park to the National Trust. The golf course and clubhouse became available and, with the help of interest-free loans from members, £7,500 was raised to purchase the property. Since then members have run the club by an elected council.

When I played KGC recently the course was in fantastic condition. It often goes unnoticed that to get a golf course in top shape, it takes committed individuals behind the scenes. It is clear from my visit this is one of its many strengths, alongside some of the recent refurbishments to add to its first class facilities. Please convey my thanks to all the staff involved.

The PGA and its professionals always look forward to being part of the Knutsford Pro-Am and this year was no different. Fortunately the weather behaved after a little bit of morning rain and the course held up fantastically. We saw some fantastic scoring both in the professional contest and the team Pro-Am, congratulations to all the winners. Huge thanks to Bob Sutton for being a great organiser, personally I always look forward to working with Bob year in year out. We at the PGA already cannot wait for next year’s Knutsford Pro-Am.
